Parallel Parking Corrections: How to Fix Too Far or Too Close Errors
Published: July 31, 2026 · 10 min read
Even experienced drivers occasionally misjudge turn reference points during parallel parking, resulting in a car parked too far from the curb, too close (about to mount the curb), or positioned at an awkward angle. On a practical driving test, candidates are explicitly permitted one forward pull correction. Master these 3 mid-maneuver correction techniques to recover flawlessly every time.
Scenario 1: Vehicle Parked Too Far From Curb (>30 cm / 12 inches)
Diagnosis: You turned your steering wheel back to neutral or counter-locked too early, leaving your car sitting broad in the active traffic lane.
Correction Technique (The S-Pull Forward):
- Shift Gear & Steer In: Select 1st Gear (or Drive). Turn your steering wheel full lock toward the curb.
- Pull Forward Halfway: Crawl forward about 0.5 to 1.0 meter until your front wheel gets within 15–20 cm of the curb.
- Counter-Lock Out: Rapidly turn the steering wheel full lock in the opposite direction (away from the curb) while moving forward the remaining 0.5 meter.
- Straighten & Reverse: Straighten the wheel as your car aligns parallel with the curb, then reverse straight back slightly if needed.
Scenario 2: Approaching Curb Too Steeply / About to Hit Curb
Diagnosis: You held the 45-degree reverse angle too long before counter-locking, causing your rear right tire to head straight toward the curb edge.
Correction Technique (The Emergency Stop & Reset):
- Stop Before Contact: Check your passenger wing mirror. If the rear tire is 10 cm from the curb and still angled inward, STOP completely before impact.
- Shift to 1st & Lock Away: Select 1st Gear (or Drive). Turn the steering wheel full lock away from the curb.
- Pull Forward & Straighten: Drive forward 0.5 to 1.0 meter. The front of the car will tuck in towards the road, straightening the rear away from the curb.
- Reverse Back: Straighten the steering wheel, select Reverse, and back up into the completed parallel position.
Scenario 3: Car Parallel but Crooked (Front Nose Sticking Out)
Diagnosis: You didn't complete the full counter-lock steering rotation during the final stage of reversing.
Correction Technique: Select 1st gear, steer full lock toward the curb while crawling forward 0.5 meters, then steer full lock away from the curb for 0.5 meters until the front nose aligns perfectly parallel with the curb.
