Parking is where the test stops being about knowing the road rules and starts being about controlling the car at walking pace while looking everywhere at once. Most marks lost here go to three things: speed, observation, and where the car ends up.
Licensing here is state-based, and this page is not your assessment guide. NSW, Victoria, Queensland, WA, SA, Tasmania, the ACT and the NT each run their own test, their own scoring sheet, and their own list of immediate-fail actions — and they don't all set the same manoeuvres. Read your own state's official assessment guide for what you'll actually be marked on. What follows is the part that is the same everywhere: the car, the kerb, and where your eyes go.
Whatever the sheet looks like in your state, the structure is broadly the same:
Which means the single most useful habit is the boring one — go slower. Nothing on the first list gets worse when you take longer, and everything on the second gets more likely when you rush.
The most common way to lose marks on a reverse parallel park, and in most states mounting the kerb is treated seriously enough to end the manoeuvre or the test.
It is almost always a speed problem rather than a steering problem. At an idle crawl you can feel the tyre touch and stop; at any real pace you're on top of the kerb before you've registered it. Reverse with your foot covering the brake and no accelerator at all. If the mirror shows the rear tyre closing on the kerb, stop before it touches, shift to Drive, steer away from the kerb, pull forward half a metre and go again.
Reversing cameras have been standard on new cars here for years, and a lot of learners have never reversed without one. The camera has blind spots at both rear corners — which is exactly where a pedestrian steps out from between parked cars.
Assessors want to see your head move, not just your eyes flick to a screen. Before the car rolls back: left mirror, right mirror, then turn and look out the rear window. Use the camera to judge the kerb, not to replace the check. And look again partway through — the space behind you is not the space that was there ten seconds ago.
You are blocking a lane while you park, and that does not give you priority. If a car, cyclist or pedestrian arrives mid-manoeuvre, stop, let them through, then continue. Waiting is never marked against you. Continuing to reverse while someone waits — or worse, making them go around you — is a give-way failure, and give-way failures are immediate-fail territory in most states.
The front of the car sweeps a long way out as the back tucks in — a fact most learners discover halfway through their first parallel park. Before the nose starts to arc out, look ahead and check the oncoming lane. If anything is coming, stop and hold.
Coming off the brake before the car is pulling, or shifting between Drive and Reverse while still moving. Stop completely for every direction change, keep your foot on the brake through the shift, and move straight from brake to accelerator. On any noticeable grade use the park brake and release it once the car is already pulling.
One correction to straighten up is normal and expected. What costs marks is a back-and-forth shuffle that walks the car further out of position with each pass — and some sheets cap how many attempts you get.
When it goes wrong, stop and work out which thing is wrong. Too far from the kerb: pull forward steering toward the kerb, then reverse again. Too steep an angle: you started the turn too late, and the fix is to begin the whole manoeuvre further forward, not to keep shuffling.
Parallel to the kerb, within about 30 cm of it, not touching it. For a bay, all four wheels inside the lines. Then check what you would be blocking — driveways, crossings and fire hydrants all have setbacks and they are set by state and local law.
A simulator can't teach you to look properly — that only happens in a real car with someone beside you. What it can do is get the reference points and the sequence into your head first, so your supervised hours go on the things that need a road.
