The simulator puts a yellow marker on that corner of the car you're passing — no line painted across the aisle, because a real car park has none. Look square to your right and stop when the corner is level with your seat, not when it's level with your wheels, which you can't see anyway.
Hug the bays and no amount of steering will save you. Start too close and the coach tells you before you commit, instead of after you've clipped the neighbouring car.
Every line touch and every contact with a parked car is counted, so you can see whether "that felt close" was 30 cm or 3 cm.

Drive down the aisle on the side away from your target bay. The further out you start, the more room the front of the car has to swing round.
Stop when your seat draws level with the car parked just before the empty bay — the yellow marker sits on that car's corner so you can see which one to sight off.
Stay in D, wind on full lock toward the bay and move off slowly. Watch the bay corner on the inside of the turn — that's the one your rear wheels cut across.
As the car comes parallel with the bay lines, straighten the wheel and drive straight in until the back of the car clears the bay line.
Why the geometry works the way it does — and why it isn't the easy option.
A full-lock 90° turn moves the car sideways by exactly one turning radius — around 3.9 metres for a typical hatchback. Going in nose-first spends that entire sideways shift on getting square with the bay, so the turn has to start from the far side of the aisle with a clear run of open space behind you.
Reversing in is different: the rear wheels are the ones that pivot, so the car tucks into the bay from much closer. That is why a car park aisle that's comfortable for reversing in can be genuinely too tight to drive into on one lock. If you find yourself shuffling back and forth, the problem usually isn't your steering — it's where you started.
The usual advice — "turn when your rear wheels reach the line" — is useless in a real car, because from the driver's seat you can see neither your rear wheels nor the ground beside you. Sight off something you can see instead: the car parked just before your target bay.
This reference holds wherever you are across the aisle. A full-lock 90° turn always advances the car by one turning radius along the aisle, so the point where you start the turn doesn't move when you start closer to or further from the bays — only whether the turn will fit does.
Reversing in and driving out is safer in a busy car park: you pull out forwards, facing the traffic and the pedestrians. Driving in nose-first leaves you reversing out blind between two parked cars later. That's the trade-off — front-in is quicker and easier to place on arrival, and worse on the way out.
Front-in genuinely wins in a few places: bays with the boot end open for loading, sloped bays, charging bays where the cable reaches the front of the car, and any bay where you'd otherwise have to reverse toward a wall you can't see.
