Parallel parking is widely regarded by learner drivers as one of the most intimidating driving test maneuvers. However, parallel parking is purely a matter of geometry, rotation physics, and precise reference points. Once you understand how your vehicle rotates around its rear axle, you can park perfectly in any street spot on your first attempt.

Section 1: The Physics of Rear-Axle Steering

Modern passenger cars steer exclusively with their front wheels. When driving forward into a tight space bounded by two parked vehicles, your rear wheels cannot move laterally, forcing the front of your car to swing out wide and requiring a space at least 2.5 times your vehicle length. However, when reversing into the space, your front wheels act as a lever, swinging the front nose into the curb while your rear axle serves as the pivot center. This allows you to fit into spaces just 1.5 times your car's length.

Section 2: The 4-Step Reference Protocol

Step 1: The Parallel Line-Up

Pull up alongside vehicle A (the car parked in front of your target space), leaving 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) of lateral clearance. Align your rear bumper directly with vehicle A's rear bumper. Shift into Reverse gear.

Step 2: Full Lock & 45-Degree Angle Entry

Check 360-degree blind spots. Turn your steering wheel full lock toward the curb (right for right-hand parking). Creep backward slowly until vehicle B (the car behind your space) becomes fully visible in your outer wing mirror, forming a 45-degree diagonal angle with the curb line.

Step 3: Straight Back & Counter-Lock

Straighten your steering wheel and reverse straight back until your front bumper just clears vehicle A's rear bumper. Then turn your steering wheel full lock in the opposite direction to pull your front nose into the bay.

Step 4: Centering & Final Adjustment

Straighten your wheels and center your vehicle between the two cars, leaving approximately 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) distance from the curb stone.

Symptom Root Cause Correction Technique
Ending up > 30cm away from curb Turned wheel too late or entry angle was under 45 degrees. Pull forward in D with full lock toward curb, then counter-lock to straighten.
Rear tire hitting curb early Entry angle was too steep (> 45 degrees) or initial distance was too close. Stop before mounting, shift to D, pull forward 1 meter while straightening.
