Angled Parking (45° & 60°) Drive-In & Reversing Masterclass

Angled parking bays (commonly set at 45° or 60° relative to one-way driving aisles) are designed to make drive-in entry smooth and intuitive. However, reversing out of angled bays presents severe blind spot challenges because neighboring SUVs and vans obstruct your diagonal line-of-sight toward oncoming aisle traffic.

Section 1: Drive-In Entry Geometry & Reference Points

45-Degree Bay Entry

  1. Aisle Clearance: Drive along the aisle leaving 1.5 to 1.8 meters (5–6 feet) of lateral clearance from the rear bumpers of parked cars.
  2. Mirror Reference: As your front side wing mirror aligns with the near painted boundary line of your target slot, turn your steering wheel smoothly into the bay (approx. 1 turn of the wheel, rather than full lock).
  3. Center & Glide: Center your car between the lines and glide forward until your front bumper is parallel with the front curb.

60-Degree Bay Entry

Because a 60-degree bay is steeper than a 45-degree bay, wait until your front wing mirror passes the center point of the bay immediately preceding your target space before initiating your turn.

Section 2: Reversing Out of Angled Bays (The Blind Spot Strategy)

Because angled bays tilt your rear window away from oncoming traffic, follow this strict 3-step reversing protocol:

  1. Reverse Straight First: Shift to Reverse. Back out completely straight without turning your steering wheel until your rear wheels / B-pillar clear the rear bumper of the car parked on your blind side.
  2. Scan & Yield: Pause briefly once your rear window extends past their rear bumper. Look back through your rear side window for approaching vehicles or pedestrians.
  3. Turn Full Lock: Turn steering wheel full lock in the direction of your departure path while reversing slowly into the aisle flow.
